Due to the low standards and lack of state schools, the SOS saw itself
forced to found its own schools. These are public and only take a part of
the fees, which are taken by private and state schools. Only 35% of children
of school age start school and an illiteratcy qoutient of over 60%. Haiti
is in the sad 1st place in the american continent for illiteracy.
The school year differs from state curriculum of 10 months and lessons are
taught all day. Classical subjects are taught from 7.30 - 12.30 and after the
lunchbreak, in which the visiting children recieve a snack, homework
supervision takes place between 1:30 - 3 PM. Afterwards lessons in the arts
take place until 4:30 PM. It is comforting to know that our pupils always
get good grades in the state exams, and its often the case for our pupils to
take first place.
